Lingo uses a hierarchical theming system that lets you set defaults at the Space level while allowing overrides for specific Portals and Kits.

You can also check out Tips for Making Beautiful, On-Brand Kits and Portals for more examples and workflows to get the most of custom branding.

The theme hierarchy

Space Theme (base defaults)
→ Portal Theme (Inherits Space theme)
→ Kit Theme (Inherits Space themes)

How it works

Space theme

  • Sets the default appearance for your entire Space

  • Applied automatically to all Portals and Kits

  • The starting point for all customization

Portal theme

  • Overrides Space-level settings for that Portal

  • Only affects the Portal landing page—not Kits inside it

  • Useful for creating distinct experiences for different audiences

Kit theme

  • Overrides both Space and Portal settings

  • Gives each Kit its own unique look if needed

  • Independent of which Portal contains the Kit

Kit themes are only available on the Enterprise plan.

FAQs

Why don't Kits inherit Portal themes?

Kits always inherit from the Space theme to ensure consistency. Since Kits can exist in multiple Portals or be accessed directly, inheriting different Portal themes would create confusion.

Can I use a custom Font?

Yes, please contact customer support to setup a custom font.

Best practices

Start with your Space theme - Get your base branding right, then override only where needed.

Use Portal themes sparingly - Override only for distinct audiences that need different branding.

Keep Kits consistent - Unless there's a specific reason, let Kits inherit from the Space theme.
